While many articles have been written about practice attendance, Coach Stefan and I have now turned our attention to an ongoing problem that affects all the Competitive Squads here at TSC, especially the older groups - Practice Punctuality!
No matter how many times we talk to the swimmers about being on deck 10 minutes before practice (at a minimum) to stretch, etc. most, if not all, swimmers walk out right at the start of the training. The most frustrating thing is when we see the swimmers come in at the same time as us and still enter the pool deck either right before practice, or in some instances, 5 - 10 minutes late. I’m sure you understand that this is unacceptable. It wastes the swimmer’s practice time, messes up the coaches daily plan and wastes the parents money.
When I was in Louisiana and Cairo, the teams owned their own pools so when the swimmers were late, we just tacked on extra time after practice. We swam great at the end of the year since all the swimmers swam the full practice time. We are not able to do that here. If a swimmer continually misses 5 - 10 minutes daily, I don’t have to tell you the effect that will have on the finished product in May or July.
While we won’t implement Frank Lampard’s solution (see below, especially #6), he DOES have a point! Please impress upon your children the absolute importance of being on time (10 - 15 minutes before the stated practice time) so we can get going right away.
